A cure for spinal cord injury is not a matter of IF, but WHEN: SpinalCure petition

For the first time, we have the opportunity to restore life changing function and feeling to Australians with spinal cord injuries. SpinalCure Australia is seeking $46 million in federal funding over five years to establish a nationwide neurostimulation Research and Treatment Program that could change the lives of Australians impacted by a spinal cord injury.

  • More than 20,000 Australians live with a spinal cord injury
  • At least ONE new injury occurs every day
  • The annual cost to the Australian economy is $3.7 billion annually
  • These injuries disproportionally affect young people at the prime of their lives
  • NO cure or treatment is currently available

We need your help to urge the federal government to fund critically important clinical trials and further studies planned to commence in 2022 that will enable cure-related treatments to be developed for more people with an SCI across Australia.

SpinalCure is currently funding an international clinical trial, and the opportunity is to broaden, scale and accelerate the rollout of this research to more Australians who need it.

Conducted by Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), this trial is harnessing the power of ‘neurostimulation’.

Neurostimulation is like a hearing aid for the spinal cord: scientists use tailored electrical currents to amplify messages between the brain and the body using the nerves that remain after an injury.

In studies overseas, this has resulted in life-changing recovery of bladder, bowel and sexual function, hand movement, cardiovascular stability and walking even years after the initial injury.

SpinalCure believe there is a solution, and we’re here to support them in any way we can. We are calling on the government to help raise these much-needed funds. How much we raise and how quickly we raise funds will determine how soon potential treatments can be made widely available and give more Australians the chance of a better life.

A cure for spinal cord injury is not a matter of IF, but WHEN.
